Little is known about the early history of the Naga people. Ancient Sanskrit books speak of golden-skinned people of the sub-Himalayan region, thought to be the ancestors of the present-day Naga who occupied the mountains 2000 years ago.
Nagaland is home to several tribes. Each tribe uses bold distinctive patterns with simple clean lines, stripes, squares, and bands, and has its own specific designs and motifs. This one-of-a-kind saree borrows design elements from the iconic Naga shawls which are a core part of the Naga culture even today. Using motifs and colour combinations that are typical to the tribes of Nagaland, our inspiration is the huge repertoire of designs that each of the Naga tribal groups own.
For our Naga Collectibles, we worked with weavers and craft clusters in Nagaland to recreate drapes that resonate with the primal quality of an ancient tribal culture.
